Wha Happened - Where Is My Nuclear Power?

What opposition could the Bush Administration have had over the past 8 years to the proliferation of Nuclear Energy? Seriously, if they didn’t care about the environment and long run implications of our energy policy (and it’s clear that they didn’t) then why wasn’t nuclear energy pushed hard?

I see both sides of the nuclear argument, and tend to fall on the, “it doesn’t produce CO2 so we should probably use it,” side. Whenever I hear the words, “we need a Manhattan Project for energy,” I always think, wasn’t that what the Manhattan Project was for? Nuclear would have been the perfect stopgap while we modernized out grid and found energy sources with fewer environmental implications. I would have been cool with a wholly privatized nuclear energy sector. So, wha happened??

Well, the only answer is cronyism. Which is infuriating. Because now it’s too late.

The environmental impact of modern nuclear plants compared to modern coal plants isn’t even fucking close. But now we’re too deep into the game to bring nuclear plants online quickly enough to really thwart our coal dependency. Stupid. All we’re left with is hail mary solutions like this one, which may work, but also may not prove feasible in the necessary timeline to stop well… the meltdown of society?
